Bariatric surgery is a vital intervention increasingly used to treat the globally rising prevalence of obesity and encompasses a variety of procedures. Given the extensive physical and psychological consequences associated with obesity, these surgical interventions are critical in managing the physical health issues of affected individuals. Despite its benefits, bariatric surgery introduces significant mental health risks, and patients may experience dissatisfaction due to unmet weight loss expectations, exacerbating psychological distress. Common postoperative psychiatric issues include depression, anxiety disorders, exacerbated preexisting eating disorders, development of new eating patterns, addiction transfer, psychotic disorders, and notably, an increased risk of suicide. This activity aims to comprehensively review the psychiatric complications linked to bariatric surgery, covering assessment, differential diagnosis, and management strategies for these challenges. The activity also highlights the crucial role of an interprofessional healthcare team, comprising psychiatrists, psychologists, therapists, and case managers, in treating patients undergoing bariatric surgery, thereby enhancing patient outcomes through comprehensive mental healthcare. This emphasizes the importance of a holistic approach to mental healthcare alongside bariatric surgery.
