Mohs Micrographic Surgery Interpretation of Technical Problems Impacting Slide Quality

Mohs Micrographic Surgery (MMS) is a precise technique with high cure rates for treating various skin cancers, including basal and squamous cell carcinoma. The effectiveness of this technique relies on the quality of histology slides prepared for each patient to minimize technical problems that can impair decision-making abilities. The MMS process, from tissue collection to slide preparation, involves several critical steps, each requiring skill and attention to technical detail to ensure accurate tumor margin assessment and minimize errors.Key stages such as debulking, tissue orientation, inking, and embedding directly impact slide quality and depend on both surgeon technique and histology technician expertise. Various slide mounting and cutting methods also play roles in preserving tissue structure, while freezing and staining steps ensure the tissue retains key histological features. Each technical process has specific challenges. Consistent methods tailored to individual tissue types (eg, cartilage or adipose) can significantly improve slide clarity, aid in accurate diagnosis and maintain MMS’s high success rates. Additionally, while MMS is not a new technique for skin cancer treatment, clinicians in other fields or general dermatology may be unaware of the process. Therefore, an improved understanding of slide preparation helps referring clinicians counsel patients on the MMS process. This activity for healthcare professionals is designed to enhance the learner’s competence in preparing MMS, recognizing common technical problems, and implementing an appropriate interprofessional management approach to improve patient outcomes.
