Mohs micrographic surgery (MMS) is a highly effective and well-tolerated cutaneous treatment that involves histologic mapping, sparing unaffected tissue and offering high cure rates. MMS is recommended for various cutaneous neoplasms, including tumors with aggressive clinical or histological features, cancers in high-risk locations, and premalignant lesions in at-risk individuals.MMS is often performed in the office-based setting using local anesthesia; thus, most patients can tolerate this procedure. The total duration of MMS varies depending on tissue processing time, the number of stages to extirpate the tumor, and the complexity of the reconstruction. Serious complications or the need for early termination are rare. Understanding patient or tumor limitations that may necessitate the procedure’s discontinuation earlier than expected is essential to providing safe, effective MMS.This activity for healthcare professionals is designed to enhance learners’ proficiency in identifying circumstances warranting early termination of MMS. Participants gain a deeper understanding of the preoperative and intraoperative indications of such a measure, which often consist of serious causes requiring immediate treatment or referral, additional workup, or coordination with interprofessional colleagues to ensure patient and staff safety. Greater competence enables clinicians to collaborate effectively within an interprofessional team caring for patients undergoing MMS.
