Pyrethrin and pyrethroid compounds are valued for their potent insecticidal properties while maintaining a high safety profile in humans. Pyrethrins are naturally occurring chemicals, while pyrethroids are artificial and more likely to cause toxicity. These substances are widely available in the United States as in-home insecticides and are used on a large scale in agricultural settings. Toxicity occurs after large-volume ingestion, inhalational exposure, and, rarely, topical exposure. Most exposures result in minor symptoms, but complex cases with systemic complications have occurred. Severe toxicity cases may resemble other insecticide poisonings, complicating identification and management. This activity for healthcare professionals is designed to enhance learners’ proficiency in evaluating and managing pyrethrin and pyrethroid toxicity. Participants gain a deeper understanding of the common presentations of this condition and best evaluation and management practices. The role of the interprofessional team in ensuring comprehensive patient care is also emphasized. Greater competence equips healthcare professionals to collaborate effectively within an interprofessional team caring for patients with pyrethrin and pyrethroid toxicity.
