As part of the Public Health Series, this meeting topic was on findings on Obesity and new treatment protocols. GRMC holds a weekly (each Thursday at 5:30p) physician/advanced practice provider zoom call hosted by Dr. Emily Briggs, Board Certified in Family Medicine and public health background and active in Texas Medical Association COVID advisory committees. Physicians in Guadalupe, Comal, Wilson and Karnes County are invited. Each week, members receive COVID Statistics in State, Comal and Guadalupe Counties, including number of cases, deaths, positivity rates, vaccination efforts, school district updates. Representatives from local hospitals provide updates on cases, treatments, availability of testing, vaccination efforts, antibody therapy, etc. Members discuss current COVID research studies from various studies across the world, and track surge trends as they impact the US and local communities. Changes in variants and effect on health and special populations (elderly, middle age, children, pregnant women, chronic conditions, long covid etc.) in addition to treatment considerations and new trends are discussed. Members conclude with round-table discussions on 1-3 special topics as relevant to that particular week. Learner Objectives for the meetings are to: Increase their understanding of specific local, regional and national trends in COVID-19 cases, including regional and local hospitalization rates. Collaborate with colleagues and local experts on latest testing, treatment and vaccine development of COVID-19. Implement evidence based practices as shared by primary care, specialists, intensivists, infectious disease physicians for general and special patient populations. Increase awareness and discuss opportunities for collaboration regarding local COVID-19 resources, community education and action plans, and create opportunities for broader COVID-19 testing/treatment for the benefit of patient care. ** During 2023, This meeting was restructured from monthly to quarterly meetings as pandemic issues eased in our community. We also expanded topics to include other Public Health Issues like Teen Suicide, STDs, Obesity, etc. Meeting in the Fall were cancelled as we felt physicians needed a break, agreeing to resume calls in 2024.
