2023 Webinar Series #1: The Culture of Safety (CME)

Since the release of the U.S. Institute of Medicine (IOM) report To Err is Human , which said that greater than 1 million preventable errors in all likelihood occur every year within the U.S., and of these between 44,000 and 98,000 results in death, the profession has continued to search for proven methods to preserve/improve patient safety and reduce medical errors. Medical errors are often attributed less to incompetence and more to communication barriers, ineffective teamwork, and systemic failures. Physicians need to be educated about contemporary approaches to ensure that the culture of their workplaces supports effective teamwork, respectful communication, and cohesive systems. At the end of the presentation, learners will be able to implement strategies to achieve the following goals in their practice: Mutual respect Effective teamwork Cohesive systems Fair and just medical care for all patients
