Patients with end-stage organ failure often require critical care. For those with advanced heart, lung, and liver disease, transplantation can be lifesaving. Because of its risks and the limited number of available organs, not all patients with organ failure are candidates for transplant. However, there is evidence that care in a transplant center may have advantages for some patients even without undergoing transplantation. The decision to refer patients to a transplant center is a complex one. This session will review indications, contraindications, and outcomes of transplant center referral for critically ill patients with heart, lung, and liver failure.
