Critical Care providers are subjected to unrelenting job-related stressors that can have negative impacts on physical and mental health. These chronic and significant job-related stressors and exposures often manifest in increased risk for mental health morbidities, including depression, substance abuse, suicidal thoughts and behaviors. While a great deal of attention has been paid to first responders, nurses, and healthcare workers, there continues to be a call to address the unmet needs of Critical Care provider wellbeing and resilience.
In this dynamic presentation, New Jersey State Major (Ret.) John Hunt will share a unique intervention model which he has developed over decades; one that integrates the concepts of Animal Assisted Intervention, Animal Assisted Crisis Response (AACR) and Critical Incident Stress Management (CISM) into a healing modality. He is joined by healthcare veteran Mary Law who will review factors contributing to stress and burnout. They will discuss how the model was initially designed to address first responders, and when proven so effective, was expanded to address the needs of professionals and other healthcare providers.
They will be accompanied by Axel, the American Kennel Club’s 2022 National Top Therapy Canine, and will share his first hand experiences which demonstrate the positive impact of the model as a means to provide decompression, respite, healing, and build resilience for healthcare providers.
