IV fluid (IVF) therapy is a mainstay of supportive critical care. However, there are many aspects of fluid therapy that continue to evolve. This session will introduce historical aspects of IVF that are fascinating and relevant to the practice of critical care, identifies controversial trends in IVF therapy, introduces evidence-based novel fluid protocols (e.g. resuscitation, open abdomen management, intracranial hypertension therapy), and reports on novel nutritional supports that are new to the market. The pharmacologic phenomenon of fluid creep will be explored, as well as ways to avoid it, including the top 10 fluid faux pas.
