A Multi-Institution Consortium to Address Health Equity in OHNS (2022 AMW)

According to the American Cancer Society’s “Cancer Facts and Figures 2022”, survival rates for oral cavity and pharyngeal cancer have not improved for black patients at the same rate as white patients. From 1975-77, white patients survived at a rate of 53% vs 36% for black patients. From 2011-2017, those survival rates increased to 67% for white patients vs 51% for black patients. Why are black patients experiencing a significantly lower survival rate compared to white patients, even in the past decade? This is just one example of health inequity that exist within otolaryngology and we are among those who are passionate about tackling these issues.

This panel will highlight opportunities to advance health equity in OHNS and improve outcomes for patients experiencing disparities that impact their health. This effort is supported by a multi-institutional collaboration launched in early 2022 to engage OHNS and community leaders, identify practice and educational gaps, apply the NIMHD research framework to develop data-driven solutions to healthcare disparities, and disseminate best practices to inform provider-patient decision making. Panelists will discuss the multi-variate factors that impact patient health, explore opportunities to improve patient-provider communications, and promote consistent implementation of CPGs for equitable health outcomes. Session attendees will be invited to share ideas for advancing health equity in our field.
