Surgeons providing full scope of inpatient and outpatient oral and maxillofacial surgery services need to provide perioperative care to patients with concomitant medical conditions. Evidence-based guidelines for the care of common medical conditions has become the standard of care. These guidelines, at times, are delayed in being published in the literature commonly read by oral and maxillofacial surgeons and therefore not incorporated into clinical practice.
