ACP’s Pain Management 3: Pain Management Principles identifies 6 underlying tenets of effective patient-centered care for management of chronic pain. By the conclusion of this module, learners will be able to: Target the underlying type of pain when treating the disease of chronic pain. Identify affective, cognitive, and sociobehavioral determinants of pain. Engage patients and their families in shared decision-making and goal setting. Help patients engage in changes that improve function despite pain. Use a multidisciplinary team approach to support patient self-management. Follow key ethical imperatives when navigating challenging pain management situations.
