ACP’s Pain Management 4: Nonpharmacologic Therapies reviews common nonpharmacologic and nonsurgical modalities used within a multimodal approach to alleviate pain. By the end of this learning activity, learners will be able to: Recognize indications for therapeutic exercise, physical modalities, and manual therapy to alleviate pain. Recognize indications for behavioral and mind-body therapies to alleviate pain. Counsel patients about the indications and limitations of pain management approaches that have a less robust evidence base but are frequently used by patients. Identify the role of local injection or dry needling for patients with refractory pain. Engage patients in productive and evidence-based risk-benefit discussions regarding incorporation of complementary and alternative medicine into a personalized, conventional pain management plan. Partner with patients to select treatment modalities for a multimodal approach that is best suited to their pain type, functional goals, and self-management plan.
