The frequency of Active Shooter events continues to increase year after year. The reasons and rationales are as varied as the number of random events themselves. It happens anywhere and it happens too often; it happens where we live, where we do our shopping, at school, at church, in public, where we vacation, and it happens at work. When our workplace is a healthcare setting, we can be especially vulnerable. The simple truth is that there is probably no more terrifying event than an Active Shooter incident. It stands alone as the most aggravated form of workplace violence.
This activity addresses preparation for an Active Shooter event. We review developing a personal action plan that involves interacting with staff members, patients and first responders. After completing this activity, practitioners/members of the healthcare team should be able to: recognize that being proactive in mental and logistical preparation can make the difference in surviving an Active Shooter event; understand how extreme stress diminishes our decision-making, critical thinking and ability to react; identify the best actions to take when confronted with an Active Shooter circumstance; examine the signals and signs of workplace violence that can telegraph an Active Shooter event; identify the action items necessary to prepare that will give the best chance to survive an Active Shooter incident; and integrate their personal protective action plan into that of their workplace.
