Acute Chest Pain: Evaluating Patients and Stratifying Risk

Acute Chest Pain: Evaluating Patients and Stratifying Risk

Chest pain is the second most common presenting complaint in the emergency department, accounting for over 7 million ED visits in the United States. These patients are often admitted to the hospital and evaluated for acute coronary syndrome (ACS) a common cause of chest pain. However, only about a quarter of these patients have ACS. Furthermore, about 10% of patients who present with chest pain but are released from the ED actually do have ACS. Accurate diagnosis of ACS can be improved by making risk stratification the primary objective in evaluation. In this educational activity, we will examine assessments and risk stratification of patients with chest pain in the ED.
