Acute pulmonary embolism is a common clinical condition with a variable clinical presentation, making the diagnosis challenging. Pulmonary embolism (PE) occurs when a thrombus originates elsewhere and disrupts blood flow in the pulmonary artery or its branches. In deep vein thrombosis (DVT), a thrombus develops within the deep veins, most commonly in the lower extremities. PE usually occurs when a part of this thrombus breaks off and enters the pulmonary circulation. PE rarely occurs from embolizing other materials into the pulmonary circulation, such as air, fat, or tumor cells. This medical condition is commonly seen in the emergency department, critical care, or hospital settings, with newly specialized Pulmonary Embolism Response Teams (PERTs) integrated into some facilities for immediate care. Based on the clinical judgment of the severity of PE, the management depends on an interprofessional team that may consist of clinicians, technicians, and pharmacists. This activity outlines the clinical features, diagnosis, and treatment of acute PE and highlights the role of the interprofessional healthcare team in improving the outcomes of patients with acute PE.
