This session offers a state-of-the-art review of addiction medicine in the context of our current understanding of the fundamental neurobiology of substance use disorders and the behavioral addictions. We will first study the assessment, diagnosis, brief intervention, counseling, and referral to mutual help groups that are essential for all addictions. Then we will explore the unique aspects of alcohol, opioids, stimulants, cannabis, and the behavioral addictions with emphasis on the most current safe and effective pharmacological options.
