Anagen effluvium is a form of nonscarring alopecia commonly associated with chemotherapy. As part of chemotherapy, antimetabolites, alkylating agents, and mitotic inhibitors can cause anagen effluvium, which is also known as chemotherapy-induced alopecia. In this disorder, the affected anagen hairs suffer a toxic or inflammatory insult, resulting in a hair shaft fracture. The hair shaft has the potential to experience thinning when chemotherapy is at its highest level of effectiveness, resulting in the formation of Pohl-Pinkus constrictions. Typically, shedding takes place within 14 days of administration of the offending drug. In most instances, it is reversible, with hair regrowing upon discontinuing the offending agent. Even though there is no cure for this disorder, new research suggests that interventions may prevent hair loss, such as lowering the temperature of the scalp to less than 24 °C during chemotherapy. This activity reviews the hair growth cycle, characteristics, causes, evaluation, management, adverse effects, and preventive strategies associated with anagen effluvium, empowering healthcare professionals with the necessary knowledge and tools to provide optimal patient care and enhance patient outcomes.
