Anterior Spinal Artery Syndrome

Anterior Spinal Artery Syndrome

Anterior spinal artery syndrome is a neurologic condition characterized by motor paralysis and loss of pain and temperature sensation, and occasional autonomic dysfunction resulting from the occlusion of the anterior spinal artery. This occlusion leads to decreased blood flow and subsequent infarction of the anterior two-thirds of the spinal cord. The presentation of symptoms varies based on the affected spinal cord region and the timeliness of medical intervention. Common causes include aortic surgery and atherosclerotic disease, which compromise blood flow to the artery. Diagnosis is typically based on clinical features corroborated by neuroimaging studies. The prognosis remains poor due to the lack of acute treatment options. This educational activity is designed to enhance clinicians’ abilities to choose appropriate diagnostic tests, effectively manage anterior spinal artery syndrome, and engage in interprofessional collaboration to improve patient outcomes. Clinicians learn to focus on treating the underlying cause and preventing complications to reduce morbidity, mortality, and long-term disability. Collaborating with a team of healthcare professionals, including, including neurologists, radiologists, surgeons, nurses, and rehabilitation specialists, facilitates comprehensive care. This collaboration enhances patient outcomes by integrating diverse expertise and perspectives, enabling prompt and accurate diagnosis, effective treatment planning, and coordinated rehabilitation efforts.
