Learning Objectives: Learners will review the history of antibiotic-resistant bacteria. Learners will be able to define and summarize resistance mechanisms exhibited by gram-negative bacteria. Learners will gain confidence in identifying resistance patterns and their implications on selecting appropriate empiric and targeted antibiotic therapy. Learners will appraise their role in helping to slow the spread and development of antibiotic resistance. Learners will apply their knowledge of antibiotic-resistant bacteria and the antibiotics with activity against these organisms to improve patient outcomes.
