Antibiotics have been one of our most powerful weapons against infectious diseases. However, as antibiotic resistant pathogens increase in number, we are finding antibiotics less effective. Healthcare workers are tasked with developing new ways to control and prevent the spread of pathogens. This presentation reviews antibiotic resistance, our responses and failures, and elements of antimicrobial stewardship programs. The speaker discusses environmental cleaning, disinfectants, and antiseptics – aspects of stewardship that are often minimized, but have huge impact.
