This presentation will begin by identifying the challenges to recovery from substance use disorders (SUD); and, how the current methamphetamine crisis serves as an exemplar of those challenges. We then will review the behavioral principles that can be applied to meet those challenges and support recovery from SUD. We will describe how Contingency Management (CM) procedurally applies those behavioral principles in strengthening behaviors such as abstinence from substances. The peer-reviewed, published evidence of CM effectiveness also will be presented. Finally, the presentation will review counter-points to rebut common critiques of CM including misperceptions of it as bribery and a threat to patients internal motivation for recovery.
