This presentation will help students of addiction psychiatry better understand psychotherapeutic approaches with transgender, nonbinary, and gender-diverse patients–especially when it applies to treating substance use disorders. Existing data suggest that transgender and gender-diverse individuals are three times more likely to report substance use. Why is this? and what can we do about it? After a brief review of terminology, this presentation will review the use of substances in transgender and gender-diverse (TGD) communities. It will cover known demographic data about different drugs of abuse, existing models of why substance use is higher in these populations–including biopsychosocial models of how addiction develops, unique issues regarding treatment and considerations for best practices, and future avenues for research.
