Fine needle aspiration of soft tissue tumors can often be difficult due to the rarity of these specimens, the growing complexity of soft tissue tumor classification, and the expanding role of ancillary testing. However, a pattern-based cytomorphologic approach to aspirates from these specimens allows for the formation of pertinent differential diagnosis and appropriate utilization of ancillary testing, when necessary, to derive an accurate diagnosis.
