Traditional approaches to treating patients with achalasia have been Heller myotomy, pneumatic dilation, and Botox injection. The minimally invasive technique of per-oral endoscopic myotomy (POEM) has emerged as a promising alternative to these techniques. POEM is now performed at various centers in the United States and around the world. Randomized data is now available that this endoscopic technique yields equivalent results to those of a Heller myotomy and thus POEM is quickly becoming a new standard of care for treating achalasia in properly selected patients. This course will introduce the participant to the indications for POEM and how to evaluate and select appropriate candidates for the procedure. Participants will also learn the POEM technique and management of adverse events through didactics as well as simulated hands-on training models. Come learn how POEM can be a safe and effective procedure for the treatment of your achalasia patients.
