Beta thalassemia is an inherited condition that causes abnormal hemoglobin production. Beta thalassemia has a high prevalence in Asian, Mediterranean, Middle Eastern, and African populations but can affect all ethnicities. Review of the MCV and MCH on the routine antepartum CBC should be used as the initial screen for beta thalassemia in all pregnant women. A Hgb electrophoresis should be ordered and evaluated if MCV is low (<80).
