Blastic plasmacytoid dendritic cell neoplasm is an uncommon CD4+ CD56+ myeloid cancer that typically manifests as cutaneous lesions with or without involvement of internal organs, including bone marrow, and leukemic spread. Adults are primarily affected, but it also occurs in children. A low threshold for biopsy is needed because the clinical presentation is not specific, and distinguishing blastic plasmacytoid dendritic cell neoplasm from benign or malignant skin lesions can be challenging. Immunohistochemistry is necessary for definitive diagnosis. Unfortunately, despite treatment, relapse is common, and overall survival rates are dismal. In adults, allogeneic stem cell transplantation improves overall survival during initial remission. This activity reviews the evaluation, diagnosis, and treatment of blastic plasmacytoid dendritic cell neoplasm, empowering healthcare professionals with the necessary knowledge and tools to provide optimal patient care for this rare hematologic neoplasm. The pivotal role of the interprofessional team and the value of a collaborative approach to patient care are discussed.
