Approximately 13% of African Americans have a high-risk APOL1 genotype associated with an increased risk of kidney disease. In fact, APOL1-mediated kidney disease (AMKD) accounts for over one third of all end-stage kidney disease (ESKD) cases in individuals with African ancestry. With several novel therapies for AMKD in late stages of clinical development, recognizing appropriate candidates for genetic testing and providing transparent, accurate, and culturally competent genetic counseling is more important than ever for empowering patients to take action, including potential enrollment in clinical trials.
