Renal crystallopathies are a group of underdiagnosed and underrecognized disorders associated with the accumulation of crystalline particles in the renal tubules and interstitium, causing acute kidney injury and progressive chronic kidney disease. This discusses the four main types of crystalline deposition, the pathologic findings and clinical manifestations. Genetic causes, acquired causes, their pathogenesis, histological features, diagnosis, and treatment options will also be addressed. While rare many of these conditions can lead to end-stage renal disease, especially in the pediatric population. There are many therapeutic interventions that can be made to improve renal outcomes. Early recognition and treatment are key to preventing reversible kidney disease.
