Coronaviruses are a large family of single positive-sense single-stranded, enveloped RNA viruses that can infect many animal species and humans. Human coronaviruses can be divided based on their pathogenicity. Severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) infections were first identified in December 2019 and termed coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). By March 2020, it was declared a global pandemic by the World Health Organization (WHO). Although primarily a respiratory disease, COVID-19 has been associated with many cardiac complications. Cardiac injury is recognized as one of the most frequent complications of the disease. Long-term cardiac complications following COVID-19 include ischemic heart disease, heart failure, arrhythmias, and myocarditis. Studies have consistently shown that underlying cardiovascular disease in patients with COVID-19 and the development of acute cardiac injury due to COVID-19 illness is associated with significantly worse outcomes. This activity reviews the clinical manifestations of cardiac complications related to COVID-19 infections and outlines their recommended evaluation and treatment.
