Caring for Patients with Opioid Use Disorder: Optimizing Interprofessional Care

The federal government eliminated the DATA X-Waiver requirement for prescribing medication for opioid use disorder on December 30, 2022. However, controlled medication prescribers are now required to complete an 8-hour training program on treating patients with substance use disorder. This program is designed to meet the MATE Act of 2023 training requirements based on DEA and SAMHSA curricular recommendations and addresses the prevention, treatment, and recovery of substance use disorders, conceptualizing addiction as a chronic brain disease affected by genetic, behavioral, cultural and socioeconomic factors. This comprehensive, one-time training program is designed to furnish healthcare professionals with a thorough understanding of the prevention, detection and management of patients with substance use disorders. An emphasis will be placed on opioid use disorder (OUD) and equip participants with the knowledge and skills necessary to effectively manage and treat patients living with this condition. The program covers a wide range of essential topics including epidemiology, pathophysiology, screening, diagnosis, pharmacology, and pharmacotherapy for medications used in the treatment of OUD. Additionally, participants will learn to breakdown stigma and barriers, facilitate harm reduction, manage and support recovery in special populations, such as perinatal and mental health patients, as well as provide effective pain management in patients living with OUD. By completing this program, healthcare providers will find confidence in championing interprofessional models of care designed to achieve longterm recovery and wellness.
