Central Nervous System Lymphoma

Central Nervous System Lymphoma

Primary and secondary lymphoma of the central nervous system (CNS) are rare entities. Primary CNS lymphoma (PCNSL) describes pathology confined to the CNS parenchyma, the dura and leptomeninges, the cranial nerves, the spinal cord, or the intraocular compartment. PCNSL occurs in both immunocompetent and immunodeficient patients. “Secondary” CNS lymphoma describes systemic lymphoma that has involved the CNS through mechanisms that can include direct extension from adjacent bone marrow, centripetal growth along neurovascular bundles, or hematologic spread. Leptomeningeal involvement occurs more commonly in PCNSL than in secondary CNS lesions. Historically plagued by dismal prognoses, with untreated survival rates as low as 1.5 months and a 5-year survival rate of only 30%, PCNSL management is now benefitting from novel chemotherapeutic and immune modulatory treatment approaches.Clinicians participating in this educational activity gain insights into the epidemiology, clinical presentations, and management strategies of CNS lymphoma. Armed with this knowledge and equipped with essential tools, healthcare professionals can significantly enhance patient care for this complex condition. Collaboration within an interprofessional team is emphasized throughout the activity as it fosters comprehensive patient management, incorporating diverse perspectives and expertise. Through such collaboration, healthcare providers can optimize treatment plans, monitor patient progress more effectively, and provide holistic care that addresses both the physical and emotional needs of individuals affected by CNS lymphoma.
