CHILD Syndrome

CHILD Syndrome

Congenital hemidysplasia with ichthyosiform erythroderma and limb defects (CHILD) syndrome is a rare condition affecting different parts of the body. This condition has been described as X-linked dominant with a male-lethal trait. Most surviving patients are females, as CHILD syndrome often results in uterine death for male fetuses.CHILD syndrome involves the NAD(P)-dependent steroid dehydrogenase-like protein gene, which controls the synthesis of a protein critical to cholesterol biosynthesis. Consequently, patients can have manifestations on the skin and underlying musculoskeletal structures, usually in half of their body. Hence, the term “hemidysplasia” in its name. The disorder has no known cure, but early symptomatic treatment can help improve patient outcomes. This activity for healthcare professionals enhances the learner’s competence in diagnosing and managing CHILD syndrome. Valuable insights will be gained that will equip learners to work as part of a multidisciplinary team in caring for affected families.
