Cholesteatoma: Surgical Decision-Making and Avoiding Complications (AMW2023)

PROGRAM DESCRIPTION: This Panel Presentation will address problems commonly seen in cholesteatoma treatment, using actual cases to discuss situations encountered at surgery. It is intended for general otolaryngologists, residents, and fellows, and audience participation will be encouraged. Three academic otologists with >100 years of combined experience will present options in management, and their treatment preferences and outcomes. Cases will be presented that illustrate issues in management, including the use of endoscopes, facial nerve monitoring, second stage surgery, recidivism, and management of complications.OUTCOME OBJECTIVE 1: Implement methods to treat cholesteatoma so as to avoid recurrent disease, and optimize hearing and functional outcomes.OUTCOME OBJECTIVE 2: Understand the role of endoscopes and imaging techniques to avoid second stage surgery.OUTCOME OBJECTIVE 3: Recognize ways to prevent and treat complications in cholesteatoma surgery.BACKGROUND STATEMENT: Cholesteatoma is a surgical disease with a significant rate of recurrence, even in expert hands.
