The goal of this program is to improve the management of chronic pain in adolescent patients and improve surgical outcomes via appropriate perioperative nutrition. After hearing and assimilating this program, the clinician will be better able to:
1. Interpret functional disability and pain scores in adolescents with chronic pain.
2. Implement strategies to improve postoperative outcomes in patients with chronic pain.
3. Select medications to treat chronic pain in adolescent patients.
4. Relate risk for aspiration under anesthesia to a patient’s preoperative gastric volume.
5. Optimize perioperative nutrition by eliminating requirements for fasting, when appropriate.
