Over thirty years ago, the AMA noted an alarming trend by physicians and hospitals: they were treating the terms standard of care and clinical practice guidelines virtually interchangeably, a trend that has only increased over time through today. This activity includes video clips from an interview with cardiologist Frederick J. White and healthcare attorney Katy Caraway to explain how this confusion of terms can rebound against the physician. The reasons why the terms should not be confused or misapplied are discussed. Examples of how guidelines change over time, how they may not be expected to apply to all patients, and how they may conflict with other guidelines are presented. Risk management recommendations to assist the physician in identifying which guidelines to be aware of, how to evaluate the strength of evidence for guidelines, and how to take precautions when departing from them are included.
