Short bowel syndrome (SBS), a rare malabsorption disorder most often caused by surgical resection, can be challenging to manage. The use of parenteral nutrition (PN) and emerging therapies promoting enteral autonomy have offered hope, however, complications of SBS and its treatments lead to frequent emergency room visits and hospital admissions. Patients with SBS need coordinated, interdisciplinary collaborative care which may be lacking in the community healthcare settings. Community-based specialists (i.e., gastroenterologists) and primary care providers will benefit from learning about the pathophysiology and complications of SBS, as well as emerging treatment strategies and how to work as a multidisciplinary team to develop interprofessional care plans for their patients with SBS in the community setting. In this CME Outfitters Recorded Grand Rounds activity, expert faculty will guide participants through a discussion of the pathophysiology and associated complications of SBS, currently available and emerging SBS treatment strategies promoting enteral autonomy and reducing the need for PN, and how to develop interdisciplinary and interprofessional coordinated care plans for patients with SBS managed in the community setting.
