Complex care practitioners work with people from a variety of backgrounds. Additionally, people with complex health and social needs are disproportionately part of groups who have and continue to experience oppression, intergenerational, and historical trauma. By being mindful of unresolved grief, distrust and trauma of majority groups, government, and healthcare, complex care practitioners can more readily and respectfully deliver programs to help people meet their goals and improve health and well-being. Complex care practitioners can better understand present-day reactions to events in the context of individual and group trauma narratives. Because trauma-related events have occurred in the context of health and social service provision, it’s also important to be mindful of a potential lack of trust in government-funded services, in research, and in health and mental health care. o build trust, practitioners can build authentic healing relationships with individuals and communities. They can also be respectful and aware of different reactions to traumatic events within communities, and focus on community strengths and resilience. It is helpful to be open to and affirm traditional ways of healing and acknowledge community resilience. With the understanding that all communities are unique with distinct cultural norms and belief systems and that individuals respond differently to trauma, complex care practitioners are in a good position to support people with complex health and social needs.
