The goal of this program is to improve management of critically ill patients using evidence-based approaches and assessment and management of breathing emergencies in patients with a permanent tracheostomy. After hearing and assimilating this program, the clinician will be better able to:
1. Summarize the strengths and limitations of recently published studies in critical care and emergency medicine.
2. Compare findings of recent studies in emergency medicine and critical care with previous literature.
3. Implement evidence-based strategies into management of critically ill patients.
4. Identify challenges involved in treatment of patients with tracheostomies or laryngectomies in an emergency setting.
5. Apply appropriate suctioning techniques and rescue breathing during an emergency based on the type of tracheostomy.
