On December 29, 2022, the Consolidated Appropriations Act of 2023 enacted a new one-time, eight-hour training requirement for all Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA)-registered practitioners on the treatment and management of patients with opioid or other substance use disorders.
The CWRU School of Medicine’s online “Safer Prescribing of Controlled Drugs” 8 hour course was specifically developed by the CME Program to help physician and advanced practice prescribers meet this new one-time requirement for all DEA-registered practitioners. This course has been developed with input from the combined expertise of our affiliated academic medical centers of University Hospitals of Cleveland, MetroHealth Medical Center, the Louis Stokes Cleveland VAMC and the Cleveland Clinic.
The course focuses on clinical skills, patient assessment, basic pharmacologic information, and the clinical reasoning strategies that apply to all controlled drug prescribing decisions, and it also contains clear and practical risk management advice.
