Delirium is common among elderly hospitalized patients. Timely diagnosis and intervention can improve outcomes for affected patients, oftentimes leading to the reversal of delirium, but unfortunately, the condition is under-diagnosed and under-treated. This activity reviews the barriers to diagnosing delirium in elderly hospitalized patients, the major screening tools for delirium, and interventions to ameliorate delirium. Online tools are identified as well to assist healthcare professionals in reducing polypharmacy in the elderly hospitalized patient.
