Dengue Prevention and Management ECHO Project

Dengue Prevention and Management ECHO Project

Dengue is endemic in Puerto Rico and other US territories. In March 2024, the Puerto Rico Department of Health declared an epidemic of dengue fever cases on PR. The last dengue epidemic occurred in 2010. Clinicians need support to update their knowledge about the best medical practices associated with the prevention, management, and treatment of dengue among children. The Dengue Prevention and Management ECHO is an initiative aiming at increasing primary care pediatricians’ capacity to: 1) diagnose, manage and treat patients with dengue fever; 2) recognize and educate about the severe dengue early warning signs and refer for inpatient medical services; 3) promote the environmental control of the dengue vector to help in the prevention of this infection, including the vaccine; 4) educate families about severe dengue warning signs and dengue prevention during the anticipatory guidance at well-child care visits. These goals will be developed through the Extension for Community Healthcare Outcomes (ECHO) platform. This activity is part of a collaboration between the CDC Dengue Branch, PRAAP, and the AAP.
