Desmoplastic trichoepithelioma (DTE) is a rare, benign skin tumor that arises from hair follicles. DTE typically presents as a small, firm, and asymptomatic nodule, often located on the face, particularly in women during middle age. Characterized by a slow-growing, indolent nature, DTE can resemble other skin lesions, including basal cell carcinoma (BCC), necessitating a careful histopathological examination for accurate diagnosis. The tumor’s distinguishing features include nests of basaloid cells surrounded by a dense, desmoplastic stroma, mimicking the fibrous tissue commonly seen in scar formation. Although benign, DTE is often excised to prevent misdiagnosis and for cosmetic reasons. This activity provides an in-depth review of DTE’s clinical presentation, histopathological features, and differential diagnosis, particularly its resemblance to BCC. Participants learn about current best practices in diagnostic techniques, including dermatoscopy, histological examination, and treatment approaches, emphasizing when surgical intervention is necessary. The activity highlights the role of an interprofessional team in managing this rare condition, ensuring better patient outcomes, and reducing unnecessary treatments.
