The goal of this program is to improve the management of diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA). After hearing and assimilating this program, the clinician will be better able to:
1. Review the etiology and pathophysiology of diabetic ketoacidosis.
2. Differentiate signs and symptoms of DKA from those of hyperglycemic hyperosmolar state.
3. Identify the differential diagnoses for DKA.
4. Select appropriate management strategies for DKA in the emergency department.
5. Determine whether a patient requires potassium and phosphate replacement therapy for DKA.
