Diborane Toxicity

Diborane Toxicity

Diborane gas is a highly flammable, reactive, and toxic gas that can irritate the mucosal linings, including the breathing passageways. This substance undergoes a highly exothermic reaction with water at room temperature, producing an explosive reaction. Diborane is used in electronics manufacturing and as a fuel propellant. The toxicity of this substance depends on the gas concentration and the individual’s exposure duration to it. Symptoms of diborane exposure include chest tightness, coughing, skin, eye, and nose irritation, and lacrimation. Respiratory impairment and collapse may occur at higher concentrations due to noncardiogenic pulmonary edema. The treatment for diborane exposure is supportive, as this substance has no antidote. This activity for healthcare professionals is designed to enhance learners’ competence in evaluating and managing diborane toxicity. After participation, learners gain a deeper understanding of diborane toxicity’s symptomatology and evidence-based interventions, allowing them to contribute more effectively within an interprofessional team caring for patients with this condition.
