This one-hour, on-demand, journal article-based activity considers the implementation challenges posed when methadone is dispensed at hospital discharge, per the a recent “72-hour Rule” change. While methadone for opioid use disorder treatment in ambulatory settings is restricted to federally licensed opioid treatment programs (OTPs) in the United States, these restrictions do not apply during hospitalization or at discharge. Nonetheless, implementation challenges arise when workflows fall outside of standard hospital care, and the authors offer tools and experiences from their institution to address these challenges.
