PROGRAM DESCRIPTION: Dysphagia is one of the most common issues with which the otolaryngologist is presented. This course will prepare the general otolaryngologist with tools and knowledge required to appropriately evaluate and treat patients with dysphagia. Emphasis will be placed on initial evaluation, understanding and interpretation of related studies, and appropriate treatment.OUTCOME OBJECTIVE 1: Understand the basics of swallowing physiologyOUTCOME OBJECTIVE 2: Understand a more sophisticated approach to evaluating the patient with dysphagia. We go over history, exam, radiologic studies, flexible evaluation of swallowing, and transnasal esophagoscopy.OUTCOME OBJECTIVE 3: Understand appropriate treatment options for swallowing disorders. We go over basics of cricopharyngeal myotomy, endoscopic zenkers diverticulectomy, dilations, and the role of dysphagia therapy.BACKGROUND STATEMENT: Dysphagia is a common complaint presenting to the general otolaryngologist. It is important for them to understand the physiology, assessment and treatment of swallowing disorders.
