ECG analysis should be based on evaluating the physiologic basis for arrhythmias and having an understanding of electrophysiology. This higher level of analysis of ECGs and rhythm strips will be associated with a significant increased accuracy of ECG readings and improved patient outcomes. Learners should be able to understand the pathophysiology behind the arrhythmias. After covering basic and advanced concepts such as cellular physiology, advanced concepts in AV node function (such as identifying the level of conduction block), functional aberrancy, SVT mechanisms, and intensive study of how to analyze wide-QRS tachycardias and complex pacemaker rhythms, our learners should be better equipped to read basic and complex electrocardiograms. They should also have an improved appreciation of the diagnosis and management of common arrhythmia syndromes.
