EMERGENCY GENERAL SURGERY IN PREGNANCY/INTRA-ABDOMINAL INFECTIONS

The goal of this program is to improve management of pregnant patients during emergency general surgery and management of intra-abdominal infections (IAIs). After hearing and assimilating this program, the clinician will be better able to:
1. Enforce preoperative and postoperative precautions for emer-gency surgery in pregnancy.
2. Summarize the revised guidelines regarding management of IAIs.
3. Recognize the importance of achievement of source control for clearance of IAIs.
4. Assess the need for procedural intervention, including surgical reintervention, in the management of IAIs.
5. Select appropriate antimicrobial therapy for treatment of community-acquired and hospital-acquired infections.
