EMS Pneumothorax Identification Without Ancillary Testing

EMS Pneumothorax Identification Without Ancillary Testing

Pneumothorax is a potentially life-threatening condition, a principal diagnosis that emergency medical services (EMS) providers must promptly identify. The most common symptoms of this condition are acute, unilateral chest pain and shortness of breath. Pneumothorax can affect all age groups. Thus, EMS providers should maintain a high index of suspicion for this condition for any patient with sudden-onset unilateral chest pain and respiratory distress. This activity is designed to enhance learners’ competence in identifying pneumothorax in the prehospital setting. Valuable insights will be gained to improve learners’ skills in working with an interprofessional team caring for patients affected by this condition.
